Eat
Smart, Play Hard
Healthy eating helps
you make the grade!
Columbus Torah Academy is a member of Team Nutrition and is committed
to making CTA a healthy school environment. We will be prioritizing
nutrition and fitness for our students during the 2005-2006 school year.
Some new initiatives this year are before school intramural sports with
Mr. Bailey and a fruit and vegetable grant that will encourage students
to incorporate more of that food group in their daily diet. Watch this
page for more details.
Our
November Fruits and Vegetables of the month are pears, cranberries,
sweet potatoes and greens.
The new dietary guidelines for Americans recommended eating 3 cups of
leafy greens a week!
Activities for this month will include a taste test in the cafeteria
and an election for CTA's favorite fruit and favorite vegetable. Stay
tuned for the results, and check the bulletin board in the library to
see which CTA students were "Caught" eating fruits and vegetables.
In
the health office this month, CTA third graders are having physical
checks of their height, weight, vision and hearing. Check your child's
BMI, when results are sent home. I he or she is in the 85th to 95th
percentile, it is considered "at risk of overweight"; over
95th percentile is "overweight". Children with these risk
factors should be referred for counseling on nutrition and life style
to avoid health consequences later in life and develop healthy habits
for today.
Call
the CTA nurse, Cathy Tran, if you have any questions or concerns about
BMI, vision or hearing.
