Lower School
Mathematics
The curriculum for K-6 develops strong foundational skills, including fact fluency, conceptual understanding, application of the math skills in context, and visual-spatial reasoning. We use Go Math! As our curricular resource, which focuses on a progression of conceptual development that takes students from the concrete use of manipulatives and number sense tools to pictorial progressions (number lines, number bonds) to abstract algorithms. It is essential that students have a strong understanding of our number system and strategies to work with numbers and operations that are robust and scale appropriately to more expansive numbers sets such as fractions, decimals, and even variables and irrational numbers by the time they are in Upper School.
Students become fluent in the following areas:
K: Add/subtract within 5
1: Add/subtract within 20
2: Add/subtract within 100
3: Multiply/divide within 100 and Add/subtract within 1000
4: Add/subtract within 1,000,000 and multiply/divide within 10,000
5: Multi‐digit multiplication and division with all whole numbers and and addition/subtraction/multiplication/division with fractions and decimals (with single-digit divisors)
6: Multi‐digit division and Multi‐digit decimal operations
Strong mathematics students develop eight specific practices over the course of their math life that help them to tackle non-routine problems or engage in new, rigorous math work. We continually aim to improve our ability to develop these practices in our students. They are:
- Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
- Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
- Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
- Model with mathematics.
- Use appropriate tools strategically.
- Attend to precision.
- Look for and make use of structure.
- Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
